Physicians spend their careers caring for other people, but we do not always create the same opportunities for physicians to care for themselves. Medicine can be extraordinarily rewarding, yet the responsibility, long hours, expectations, and pressure that accompany the profession can take a significant toll. Too often, physicians experiencing burnout, depression, substance use concerns, or other challenges feel they have to carry those struggles privately.
My own experiences have shaped how I think about physician mental health. I have learned that asking for help should never be viewed as a contradiction of the strength and resilience expected of a medical professional. In fact, recognizing when support is needed can be one of the most important steps a person takes. Unfortunately, concerns about stigma, professional consequences, and how colleagues may respond can make that step much more difficult than it should be.
