Photovoltaic solar cells convert sunlight into electricity, but traditional flat silicon cells lose nearly half of the incoming light due to surface reflection. While antireflective coatings help mitigate this issue, their effectiveness is typically limited to narrow wavelength ranges and specific angles of light incidence. A recent study, published in Advanced Photonics Nexus, introduces a new solution that may overcome these limitations.

Researchers have developed an innovative antireflective coating using a single ultrathin layer of polycrystalline silicon nanostructures—also known as a metasurface. This design was achieved through a combination of forward and inverse design methods, enhanced by artificial intelligence. The resulting metasurface sharply reduces sunlight reflection over a wide spectrum of wavelengths and angles, all without requiring complex multilayer structures.

The coating functions effectively across the visible to near-infrared spectrum, from 500 to 1200 nanometers. It reflects as little as 2% of light when the sun hits directly, and only about 4.4% even at oblique angles—performance levels previously unseen in single-layer coatings.

This advancement demonstrates how nanostructure-based design can significantly improve solar panel efficiency. The simplicity and performance of the coating suggest it could be integrated into commercial solar technology, helping to accelerate the global shift toward renewable energy.

Beyond solar panels, the research also contributes to broader progress in optical and photonic device design. The principles behind the coating may enable new multifunctional photonic surfaces, enhancing not only energy technologies but also sensors and other light-based systems.
